New Book
by
President Bloch

The Gift Gallery at Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute is pleased to announce President Milton Bloch's newly-published book Managing Nonprofit (and For Profit) Organizations - Tools, Tips and Tactics is now available.

Bloch writes, "This book offers a compendium of more than 100 insights and observations that have been of great assistance and comfort in my career. Readers may variously put some of these ideas to use immediately, smile at others, and scowl at a few. If any of these reactions result, I will have accomplished my goal."

The price of the book is $12.95 ($14.08 w/tax).

Please take note, Milton Bloch does not profit from the sale of this book.
All profits benefit the Gift Gallery.

Recording by Local Vocalists
Available in Gift Gallery

Close Your Eyes and See the World, a new CD featuring local performers is available at the Gift Gallery. It features original songs composed by RoseAnn Grasso and harmonies developed by Grasso and Annemarie Garramone.

Garramone and Grasso met in the early 1990's, when they both joined the Utica Etude Music Club.

Garramore is a well-known performer and choreographer for local theater productions. Grasso has been a choir member and soloist in local and Albany churches for two decades. Upon discovering that their two voices blended well together, they began to sing duets for the Etude Scholarship Fundraiser Shows. These duets encompass a variety of types of songs. Encouraged by relatives and friends, they have finally produced a CD that highlights their favorite category of music - inspirational.

Handcrafted Pottery
Featured in Gift Gallery

The pottery of James Burke, created in his country studio, is now available at the Gift Gallery. His work combines function and style making pottery that is both useful and fascinating. He began working with clay in Virginia in 1972 and moved back to upstate New York and the family farm in 1982. Ceramics has always remained part of his life and he currently has established a full-time studio. Each pottery piece is made of stoneware clay, hand-thrown and fired at temperatures exceeding 2,300 degrees fahrenheit. Burke's pottery is oven, dishwasher, and microwave-safe.

After the Festival
After the Festival, 1888 by Francis Davis Millet is the inspiration for the 1.75" oval porcelain keepsake brooch. Millet's historical figure paintings were based on extensive antiquarian research. The cool, silver tonalities of his work, the woman's Greek costume, and her mood of reverie derives from the artist's admiration of the paintings of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema's (1836-1912).

The Voyage of Life Childhood

A perennial favorite among visitors to the Institute is Thomas Cole's The Voyage of Life, 1839-40, oil on canvas. This masterful series of allegorical paintings was commissioned by prominent New York banker and philanthropist Samuel Ward, Sr. in March of 1839. As the title conveys, the subject is life, depicted in four distinct stages: Childhood, Youth, Manhood, and Old Age. The series compares life to a journey through an elaborate landscape of time. The reproductions are 11" x 14" format, full color with a matte finish.
