Available all year

  • The whole book approach is explored by reading an age appropriate picture book and focusing on the illustrator’s interpretation of the story. The story is followed by a docent lead tour connecting the story to artwork in the museum galleries.

Hats Off (and On)

Available all year

  • The students are given the opportunity to practice their close observational skills by focusing on the hats and clothing worn by figures in an artwork. This leads into a discussion about where the people are, what they are doing and how they might be feeling - all based on what the students see. Students are kept engaged by gallery activities with attention to the shapes and colors in the art.

Learning to Look: Introductory Level

Available all year

  • An Introduction to the Elements of Art (color, line, shape and texture) and an introduction to reading a painting by exploring emotions portrayed in art works.
  • Hands-on activities: Texture Bag Search and Happy/ Yucky Faces & Words.

Victorian Yuletide Exhibition

This annual exhibition opens the Friday after Thanksgiving and runs through the end of December.

  • Each year we offer a different theme based on the popular Yuletide Tours at Fountain Elms. These themes explore 19th century Christmas traditions and celebrations.

Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS)

Available throughout the academic year

*This program is also offered as an Outreach program available throughout the academic year 

  • VTS tours encourage students to read artwork as a primary source document. Evidence based learning is emphasized through a series of questions facilitated by the VTS trained docent with each question demanding deeper investigation requiring the students to defend their observations. Advanced use of VTS skills by students can be applied to viewing maps, charts and reading text.
  • These tours can be customized to your curriculum offering the option of an in-classroom introduction followed by a museum visit presented by a trained docent facilitator.
