Picture of the Month

In commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center, the Museum of Art presents Stan Friedman’s painting, Nighttime View from the 91st Floor, Tower 1, World Trade Center, 2001 as the September picture of the month.

During the summer of 2001, Friedman had a residency with the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, which granted artists studio space at the World Trade Center. He had been painting cityscapes his entire career and loved the unusual perspective from his aerie on the 91st floor. He described the nighttime view as “a universe of moving and stationary stars, nebulae of differently lit neighborhoods and shimmering river reflections.” Nighttime View from the 91st Floor is only one of two paintings Friedman had removed from his studio before 9/11/01; he lost all of his summer’s work, eight more paintings, that he had left there. He wasn’t able to paint again for four more months.
