Remodeled Galleries Showcase Nineteenth-Century Fine and Decorative Arts Collection
The Museum’s historical American paintings and decorative arts have been reinstalled in renovated galleries. Divided into four chronological sections, the exhibition traces art historical movements from the middle of the 18th through the early 20th century focusing on neoclassicism, the Hudson River School, and the influence of European taste on American fine and decorative arts. Thomas Cole’s series of four paintings, The Voyage of Life (1840), is shown in an intimate gallery where visitors can sit surrounded by the artworks, viewing them in a way that approximates what Cole intended. Some of the Museum’s newest acquisitions, including an impressive cabinet (ca. 1875) by Philadelphia maker Daniel Pabst as well as Thomas Doughty’s upstate New York winter landscape Early Winter, Hiawatha Island, Owego, New York (ca. 1853), are on view for the first time.
