March 28 - December 31, 2013 : Beyond Their Years: A Look at Youth from Victorian Times to Today

Beyond Their Years: A Look at Youth from Victorian Times to Today, presents works of art spanning three centuries that explore some of the complexities of childhood and adolescence. The Fountain Elms setting for the exhibition is a radical move for the museum, since the room has been a Victorian-era bedroom setting since 1960.

Childhood is ideally a time of innocence and play. Is this a luxury reserved for a few, or are there expectations of youth that belie this conventional view, regardless of class or status? Many of the toys and outfits designed for children simply mimic the activities and clothes of adults. A child-sized Windsor chair and a miniature wood stove with pots, both from the Museum’s collection, illustrate the idea of play being an opportunity for children to make believe they are adults; cooking and dressing like a grown-up. Hollis Sigler’s 1987 painting, You Enter This Place of Abandoned Desires, on the other hand, evokes a mix of coming-of-age yearning and nostalgia; juxtaposing a wrecked school bus with miscellaneous lost objects such as a high-heeled shoe, and a man’s tie.

The exhibition is organized by students in the Exploring Museum Careers High School Partnership Program. The students, Charlotte Bausch, (Hamilton), Julia Cranell, Vito Valenzi (Whitesboro), Igor Dunikov, Olivia Kodsy, Casey Miller (Clinton), Julia Madore, and Savannah Sears (New Hartford), worked together with MWPAI staff on all aspects of producing the exhibition, from selecting the objects to presenting the opening gallery talk. They began by meeting with the museum curators and reviewing objects in the museum’s collection. In subsequent meetings the students met and worked with other staff to learn about each person’s career background and role at the museum. The students completed regular assignments and participated in art research, publication design, marketing, exhibition layout and installation, object label writing; and audioguide production for the exhibition.

May 10 - September 1, 2013 : Exhibition Celebrates Local Artist Henry DiSpirito

Utica sculptor Henry DiSpirito had a profound effect on his community and the art world.

An exhibition of his works from the MWPAI permanent collection will be on view May 10 through September 1 in honor of a new book on DiSpirito. Breathing Life into Stone: The Sculpture of Henry DiSpirito by Ashley Hopkins-Benton and published by Fenimore Art Museum, Cooperstown, is a comprehensive exploration of Henry DiSpirito’s life and a celebration of his legacy.

Born in Castleforte, Italy in 1898, DiSpirito began working in stone with his father, who was a stonemason. After emigrating to America in 1921, DiSpirito became a stonemason and bricklayer. He pursued his artistic aspirations at Munson-Williams-Proctor, where he studied sculpture with Richard Davis in the 1940s. DiSpirito’s method of directly carving stone was partly determined by his training, but greatly influenced by the modernist sculpture which he was exposed to under Davis.

DiSpirito received much recognition during his lifetime. He exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago, and his work is in numerous collections, including MWPAI’s Museum of Art. DiSpirito’s sculpture Leaping Frog is among the Museum’s earliest acquisitions.

In 1961 DiSpirito retired from construction work. From 1963 until his death in 1995 he was Artist-in-Residence at Utica College. DiSpirito is best known locally for his home sculpture garden, his presence in Utica, and his frequent forays to fish on Otsego Lake.

Guidelines for Submission

Art Teachers are invited to submit a maximum of 10 digital images of student work.
Work should be inspired by, or in the style of the work of Andy Warhol (categories listed below)

Images must be the following size/format:

Still pictures: 600 x 800 and 150 dpi
Screen Test films: max 60 sec.; saved as .mov, or .mp4, or .avi

Deadline for submission is May 24 see below for Categories/Themes (for examples, lesson plans, ideas, please see the Andy Warhol Museum website: www.warhol.org and click on Education)

Elementary – Middle School: Portraits (may consist of the following)

• image of possessions/favorite location/other things that represent the subject

A preschool introduction to art, this program emphasizes visual literacy through picture books and artwork in the Museum of Art. The approximately 45-minute program includes an interactive reading of one or two books, a discussion of one or two works of art in the galleries, and a simple take-home craft. For children ages 3 to 5 and their caregivers. Younger and older siblings are welcome!

Nursery schools or preschool programs also welcome, but please call ahead, 797-0000, ext. 2158.

Enjoy this extensive selection of art works by the 20th century’s most compelling artist. “The Prints of Andy Warhol: From A to B and Back Again” on view June 9 through September 8, 2013 in the Museum of Art.

The exhibition has 63 works of art, created at different points in Warhol’s career, including advertising; Campbell’s Soup Cans; celebrity portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Liz Taylor, Muhammad Ali, and Mick Jagger, among others; flowers; camouflage; “Ladies and Gentlemen,” and “The Last Supper.” The exhibition also features Warhol’s wallpaper with cows and his silver mylar balloon clouds.

Because Warhol was an astute observer of social mores, his artwork at once captures and reflects the gloss of packaging and marketing has mushroomed in post-World War II America. That rampant consumerism continues to define the United States in the new century demonstrates the power of Warhol’s insight.

“The Prints of Andy Warhol” presents Warhol as a canny observer of American popular culture. A working-class Catholic boy from Pittsburgh who became a successful graphic artist and then the toast of the New York City art world, Warhol understood like very few in his era the power of aspiration and desire in product packaging and marketing. From soup to politicians and movie stars, all imagery was fodder for his shrewd assessment; he elevated a collection of mundane soup cans into a minimalist-inspired grid and leveled the glamorous movie star head shot into a garish clown mask. The exhibition asks if this body of work is, as Warhol maintained, a portrait of America or an unblinking unmasking of American values.

Mary Murray, MWPAI Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, said Warhol “He was at once the ultimate insider who observed everything as an outsider."

This two-day workshop will explore mixed media drawing and collage with various materials. The first day will start with a visit to The Museum of Art exhibition, The Prints of Andy Warhol: From A to B and Back Again to find inspiration and ideas for the project. On the second day students will work from still life, exploring the possibilities of working from life vs. the imagination. The workshop will culminate with a review of the work produced. Materials included with tuition.
