The Department of Modern and Contemporary Art is home to fine arts collections dating from 1900. Highlights include paintings by The Eight (the “Ash Can School”)—such as Maurice Prendergast’s Landscape with Figures which was exhibited at the infamous 1913 Armory Show— from the Depression era, with important compositions by Edward Hopper, Reginald Marsh and Georgia O’Keeffe, as well as signature pieces by New York School artists Arshile Gorky, Philip Guston, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and David Smith. The collection of contemporary art features the work of Louise Bourgeois, Ann Hamilton, Susan Rothenberg, Alison Saar, Pat Steir, Frank Stella and Andy Warhol.
