61st Exhibition of Central New York Artists April 5 through July 13, 2008 Barry Perlus, Jaya Piralcasa of the Delhi Observatory, 2004-06, Photography This 61st edition of the lively and popular exhibition series features works of art in all media by artists living within a 100-mile radius of Utica. State Licensed Massage Therapist, teacher and sculptor I am one of the artists participating in the 61st Exhibition of Central New York Artists, at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute Museum of Art, in Utica, NY. The exhibition features 38 artists who live in a 100-hundred mile radius of Utica. The installation I've made is titled “Nurse Buttons (m.o.p.) An Internist.” I am seeking responses from Nurses to accompany my work. Basically, the work is about a nurse from the turn of the century and what she does on her day off for self care. The five segments which comprise “Nurse Buttons (m.o.p.) An Internist “ are listed below by individual title. They are made with: furniture, coverlets, light fixtures, paintings and photographs, bleeding glasses, found or made elements, and a blue bread box The following are the individual titles for each of the five segments: Nurse Buttons' (m.o.p.) Eye Rinsing and Hand Washing Station, with a clear handle (introspection accountablility,acceptance, forgiveness, and personal growth) Nurse Buttons (m.o.p.) As a Young Girl, Nurse Buttons on her day off wearing a new hat, Bleeding Glasses, Best Friends and Other Photographs All Bolstered up by the Brackets Striped nearly bare(friendship and other clarifying activities) Nurse Buttons' (m.o.p.) Full Sized Bed and Coverlets (resting and dreaming) Nurse Buttons' (m.o.p.) Blue Bread Box (nourishment and sustanence) Nurse Buttons' (m.o.p.) Boar Bristle Body and Nail Brush II: Lessons for Survival in the Wilderness—How to Thrive (detoxification, elimination and renewal) The following is my artist’s statement as it appears in the exhibition: Environment, body and the residue of activity are sublime historians—organic recorders of everyday life. They are my constant starting points as I explore the relationship between place, activity and healing. In this series, Nurse Buttons (m.o.p.) An Internist, I continue an exploration of ideas about and sources for nourishment. Through repetition, the intimacy of miniature scale and strangely familiar objects, I hope to elicit a slowing down response in viewers, inviting them to make room for inquiry as they relate to the installations, the interior scenes embedded in the installations and in their memories. Joan Carlon, On the Run, 2006, inks, tissue, collage, 22” x 20” Art Happening for Adults Silhouettes of Self Tuesday, May 20, 2008 10 to 2 pm School of Art Student Center $20 MWPAI members; $25 general public Register by Tuesday, May 13 Taught by Joan Carlon, Artist 61st Exhibition of Central New York Artists This workshop will focus on storytelling with images, silhouettes, shapes and words, using Joan Carlon’s collaged images in the exhibition for inspiration. Participants will create a personal story on paper with images based on their own life experiences using collage and cut-out techniques, wash, colored inks, and tissue paper. Time will be devoted to writing short paragraphs to combine with the images on a paper ground. Particular attention will be given to rhythm, negative and positive space, dark and light, the power of words and choice in creating an energetic composition. Artist Joan Carlon has been collecting the stories of refugees for several years and has made a group of installations based on displacement, loss, transition and hope. Her drawings are inspired by Greek amphora, and cut-outs by Matisse and by Kara Walker. Art Happening for Adults Registration Form for May 20. Lou Getty’s miniature interiors in Nurse Buttons’ (m.o.p.) explore the relationship between place, activity and healing. Dorene Quinn’s work examines the visceral nature of the visual, using objects to explore the connection within to the world that surrounds us.
