Home and Away: Exploring Photography in the Fine and Decorative Arts from the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute, organized by students in the Exploring Museum Careers High School Program, opens to the public Saturday, March 29 in the Museum of Art.
The exhibition illustrates a range of photographic processes, beginning with the earliest photographs: daguerreotypes and tintypes from the 1850s, through contemporary works. Central to the exhibition is Open Door, a digital montage by Jeffrey C. Becton, which utilizes a modern technological photographic process to produce its image.
This year, seven students from three area high schools are involved in the program: Erin Turner from Ilion, Ruth Isserman, Patrick King and Amanda Occhionero from Clinton; and Bianca Oliveri, Rosa Oliveri and Stephanie Roback from Frankfort. These students worked together with Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute staff on all aspects of producing the exhibition, from selecting the objects to leading tours. After meeting with the museum curators and reviewing objects in the museum’s collection, the students selected objects for their exhibition. In subsequent meetings at the museum, students met and worked with other museum staff to learn about each person’s career background and role at the museum. The students completed regular assignments and participated in art research, publication design, marketing, exhibition layout and installation, arranged public programs and tours; and produced a podcast.
