Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute has earned a distinguished reputation for offering world-class performing arts to Central New York audiences. Our Performing Arts Division presents events year-round, featuring international soloists and ensembles, rising stars, cinema, concerts with commentary, outdoor festival performances, children's programs, educational activities, and special events. Located in the heart of New York State, MWPAI has long been the region's leading cultural organization.
For more than 70 years, the finest international soloists and ensembles have been featured in our Great Artists Series. Since its inception, the Great Artists Series has been the region's premier concert presentation. Celebrated artists who have performed over the years include legends Isaac Stern, Itzhak Perlman, James Galway, The Vienna Choir Boys, and The London City Opera. The combination of exceptional performances and the exquisite setting of Utica's majestic and historic Stanley Theatre creates an unparalleled experience for our audiences.
MWPAI also presents the best in jazz and contemporary music at our Concerts in the Court series. In the intimate and unusual setting of the Edward Wales Root Sculpture Court, exceptional artists ranging from Bela Fleck and the Flecktones to Joshua Redman and the New York Voices have filled the museum with their scintillating sounds.
Offering more than 100 events annually, MWPAI presents a great variety of entertainment, plus some unique experiences for concert-goers. Our Young Artists Series spotlights the superstars of tomorrow, and gives audience members an opportunity to meet these future international celebrities at receptions following each performance. Concerts with commentary are offered through the world-renowned pianist Jeffrey Siegel and his trademark Keyboard Conversations. Children and adults together enjoy superb family entertainment through the Institute's For Kids and Families presentations. And presenting the finest in independent cinema, MWPAI's Film Series rounds out a superb lineup of outstanding entertainment.
Soloists, films and children's programs are presented in the intimate Museum of Art Auditorium. Performing arts programs also include community residencies by visiting artists, pre-concert talks, printed program notes and interpretive materials. A newsletter with background information on upcoming concerts is published for Great Artists Series patrons.
