Quilt Design Workshop: Paper Piecing Abstract Narratives

Saturday, March 4, 2017, 1 pm - 5 pm
Location: Studio Building, Main Level, Room 240

Ages 18+ / All Levels / Thomas Knauer

Explore how traditional quilting forms can produce a wide range of emotional effects by emphasizing ideas of color theory, musicality, and poetic meter. Participants delve into telling abstract stories through quilts by employing a variety of papers, design aids, and collage with design techniques including rhythm, scale, and variation. By focusing on design approaches rather than sewing techniques, this workshop offers insights and inspirations for everyone from experienced quilters to those who simply appreciate the tradition.

THOMAS KNAUER holds Masters of Fine Art from Ohio University and Cranbrook Academy of Art and was a professor of art and design before he began designing fabric and quilts. Thomas is a published quilt design author, has designed six fabric collections for Andover Fabrics, writes an ongoing column for Quilters Newsletter, has quilts in numerous magazines, and actively exhibits in quilt shows and museums. Thomas's work is included in the exhibition American Quilts: Sewn Stories.
