Tea with the Dames is a unique celebration of the lives and careers of four of England’s most iconic actresses: Dame Judi Dench, Dame Maggie Smith, Dame Joan Plowright and Dame Eileen Atkins. All four have gone from being fledgling actresses in the 1950s to acting royalty, and have been friends for over fifty years. Each a winner of an Olivier Award (England’s equivalent of the Tony), they trade fascinating stories about its namesake Sir Laurence and other stage and screen luminaries, as well as assorted husbands, at the beautiful country estate where Plowright and Olivier lived when married. Maggie Smith, who played Desdemona to Olivier’s Othello in 1965, recalls that his slap during a performance “was the only time I saw stars at the National Theatre.” The film also includes a range of astonishing archive material.
