Bria Skonberg Quintet
The 2018-19 Concerts in the Court series continues with the Bria Skonberg Quintet 7:30 p.m., Saturday, January 26 in the Edward Wales Root Sculpture Court. New York-based Canadian singer, trumpeter, and songwriter Bria Skonberg has been described as one of the “most versatile and imposing musicians of her generation” by the Wall Street Journal. Recognized as one of “25 for the Future” by DownBeat Magazine, Bria Skonberg has been a force in the new generation with her signature sound of fiery trumpet playing and smoky vocals with creative concoctions of old and new.
The 2017 Juno winner for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year, Skonberg has performed at hundreds of festivals worldwide. She is the co-founder of the New York Hot Jazz Camp and New York Hot Jazz Festival. In 2015, following her second album, Into Your Own, Skonberg received the distinguished Jazz at Lincoln Center Swing Award. In the last year, she has performed the music of Aretha Franklin alongside Michelle Williams, played with U2 at the Apollo, sat in with the Dave Matthews Band at Jones Beach Amphitheatre, was a featured guest with Jon Batiste, and sang The Star Spangled Banner at Madison Square Garden for a New York Rangers game.
